Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework (PB4L)

Mount Carmel Catholic College is a PB4L school. Positive Behaviours For Learning (PB4L) is an evidence-based, three-tiered organisational framework for behaviour support to enhance respectful relationships and engagement of students in their learning. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. This framework is an integral component of the CEDoW Student Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Policy, which articulates the need for schools to ‘play an active role in building a positive learning environment where the whole school community feels included, connected, safe and respected’ (Australian Student Wellbeing Framework, 2018, p. 5).

Characteristics of successful implementation

  • Support PB4L implementation through the use of a common language, experience and vision.
  • Set explicit expectations for students and staff.
  • Inform decision making through the collection and use of data.
  • Create a plan of action and regularly review and revise it.

Benefits of PB4L when it is implemented effectively

  • Reduced problematic behaviour.
  • Increase time that is focused on instruction.
  • Enhanced social-emotional wellbeing.
  • Encourages positive and respectful relationships amongst students and staff.
  • Provides a model for teachers to respond effectively to student needs.

Components of PB4L

Three-tiered system

The PB4L framework incorporates a three-tiered system of both academic outcomes and behaviour support for all students - comprising universal, target intensive support.

Poster Matrix Strips

Throughout the College PB4L posters will be displayed to serve as a reference point for both staff and students of the positive behaviours expected in each designated area around the College. Each poster reflects the themes of respect, responsibility and safety which underpin the PB4L Framework.
